Abstract
In this chapter we give a down-to-earth introduction to the theory of Abelian varieties, with the purpose of making this book reasonably self-contained and accessible to the applied community. The basic algebraic-geometric tools that we present here are well-known and can be found scattered around in the excellent books by Fay [52], Lange-Birkenhake [105], Mumford [129], Weil [172], and especially Griffiths and Harris [69].
