Abstract

The purpose of adaptive beamforming is to apply a scaling weight to each of an array’s sensor outputs in such a way that their linear weighted combination in effect steers the array’s beam in a desired direction while blindly learning and then attenuating interference and background clutter from other directions. The signals of interest can be detected and localized by measuring the beamformed sensor output power. Adaptive beamforming has been applied to a wide variety of civil and military systems such as radar, sonar, wireless communication and seismology [1–6].
