Abstract

Some tumours can be selectively destroyed by heat. Initial animal and in vitro studies have been extended to human treatment, either taking the form of isolated limb perfusions for localised disease or whole body hyperthermia for disseminated disease. Fifty one patients in the terminal stages of advanced malignant disease have been treated by raising the body core temperature to 41. 8°C for approximately 4 hours. In 13 cases the effect of a combination of cytotoxic drugs with hyperthermia was assessed.
