The interaction of mathematics and physics is proceeding along strange paths at present. Dirac, one of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, stated the strategy of theoretical physics as follows: “In setting about to construct a physical theory, one must reject all previous physical models, as well as the ‘physical intuition’ based on them, which is nothing more than a collection of preconceived points of view.” We must, according to Dirac, simply choose a beautiful mathematical theory and systematically find physical interpretations for its consequences, not fearing any contradiction with previous theories.
