Abstract
The height of trees is important to forestry particularly because:
-
The length of the stem is important as part of any calculation of the total amount of wood contained within it, and
-
The height of the tallest trees in the forest is the basis of one of the most important measures used in forestry to assess the ‘productive capacity’ of the site on which the trees are growing. This is a measure useful to asses how rapidly wood will be produced at a site and it will be discussed further in Chapter 8.
