Abstract

In the first part of this chapter, we cover some general topics concerned with signal processing and noise analysis (Sects. 4.1 and 4.2). In the remaining sections we present the principles, properties and limitations of various receiver systems used in radio astronomical observatories. This includes bolometers and coherent radiometers as well as spectrometers and pulsar back ends. It is essential to have a working knowledge of Fourier transforms in order to make use of the concepts presented in Chaps. 4 to 8. We give a summary of the properties of Fourier transforms in Appendix B. The most important operation of these is convolution and topics related to convolution.
