Abstract

When designing the acoustics of rooms, the problem of influencing the sound reflections at the room boundaries often arises. In factory buildings, for example, it is necessary to inhibit the noise emitted by machinery from travelling to areas further away via reflections; one is interested in obtaining a sufficiently high absorption at the walls. On the other hand enhancing the sound for the audience in auditoria like listening rooms and concert halls has to be achieved by indirect reflections, while simultaneously preventing too much reverberation caused by multiple reflections which would, for example, make intelligibility more difficult.
