Appendix: Pattern formation in the development of higher organisms

  • Hans Meinhardt
Part of the The Virtual Laboratory book series (VIRTUAL LAB.)

The preceding chapters dealt exclusively with the pattern on the shells of molluscs. It has been pointed out repeatedly, however, that these patterns are only a special case for a process of vital importance, the formation of patterns in organisms during their embryonic development. In this chapter, some important steps in this development will be outlined and compared with corresponding models. Later in this chapter, some special biological phenomena will be discussed in which close parallels to the interactions worked out for the shell patterning will become obvious.
