Plates and Shells

  • Otto T. Bruhns

In this chapter, we will consider 2D structures, and assume that the shape of the structure is described by its middle surface and thickness h perpendicular to this middle surface. We assume further that the thickness is small compared to the dimensions of the middle surface, which means that here we restrict our considerations to thin-walled 2D structures. According to the shape of the middle surface, and the loading of the structure, we distinguish between:
  1. (i)

Plates with plane middle surface, and forces acting parallel to this middle surface. In the sequel we will call this a disk.

  2. (ii)

Plates with plane middle surfaces, and forces acting perpendicular to the middle surfaces, and

  3. (iii)

    Shells with curved middle surfaces.
