Development of the theory of bending of beams was based on the assumption that, before deformation, all fibers of a small beam element have the same length dx. If the beam is initially straight, this assumption is true, and it can serve as a good approximation if the curvature of the beam is small. However, for beams with considerable initial curvature, this curvature has to be taken into account.
