Abstract
Let us consider a situation when a two-level atom is irradiated by continuous wave (CW) monochromatic laser light. Such an atom can absorb and consequently emit only one photon. In accordance with the principles of quantum mechanics, the instant of time at which a photon is emitted or absorbed is not determined. Therefore the atom will jump at random times between the ground and excited electronic states.
