Abstract

Cancer of the breast is the most common malignant neoplasm diagnosed and the second most frequent cause of cancer-related death in women in the United States. This translates annually into an estimated 184,200 new diagnoses, 30% of cancers in women, and 40,800 related deaths, 17% of all cancer deaths in women [1]. The risk of women developing breast cancer over their lifetimes is about 1 in 8 (12%) and their risk of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 28 (3.6%) [2]. The incidence rate increases with age until the late 40s and then decreases [3].
