Abstract

Reports of head and neck cancers include malignant tumors arising in all structures cephalad to the clavicles except for the brain, spinal cord, base of the skull and usually the skin. In 2001, it was estimated that there were about 30,100 new diagnoses of cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, with a consequent 7,800 related deaths [1]. However, any meaningful analysis requires a separation of specific anatomic structures because of variations in tumor types, function, morbidities and even cosmesis. This discussion will include cancers arising in the oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, larynx, nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, salivary and thyroid glands. Because of the diversity of tumors with a range of biologic behavior, it is essential that diagnosis, management and evaluation involve an integrated group of surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, oral surgeons and specially trained nurses.
