Abstract
The structures within the automotive industry have changed. For instance, the number of independent vehicle manufacturers has fallen from 36 (in the year 1970) to 11 (in the year 2001; Fig. 1). At the same time, there has been a sharp increase in the number of vehicle variants — i.e. vehicle models, engine versions and trim levels — coupled with substantially shorter product lifecycles (Fig.2).
