Abstract

The theoretical description of nonlinear response has been well documented since the early book by Bloembergen [121]. However, the case of resonant phenomena, which often needs a self-consistent determination of the EM field and polarization, does not seem to have been satisfactorily studied. In particular, the nonlocality of nonlinear response has been very poorly investigated. For this reason, we put our main stress on nonlocal aspects of the problem in the present chapter on nonlinear response. This will provide us with a new mechanism for nonlinear processes, which can be used as a new guiding principle for inventing nonlinear devices.
