Abstract
The laser Doppler and phase Doppler techniques involve numerous complex physical processes and require a rather broad interdisciplinary understanding to be operated successfully. This part of the book begins, therefore, with two essential topics, namely, the fundamentals of light propagation and optics (chapter 3) and the light scattering from small particles (chapter 4). Before embarking on these topics however, a preliminary introduction into the physical operating principles of the laser Doppler and phase Doppler techniques is given, in anticipation of the need for these details in later sections.
