Abstract

Transient tachypnoea of the newborn is also referred to as retained fetal lung fluid. Normally this fluid is cleared from the lungs at, during or shortly after birth via the tracheo-bronchial system (30%), the interstitial lymphatics (30%) and the capillaries (40%) (Cleveland 1995). In transient tachypnoea of the newborn the normal physiological clearance of fluid is prolonged.
