Abstract
This chapter deals with analytical calculations of coils. Quantities of interest are the magnetic field in the center and also within the coil’s cross-section, so that the Lorentz forces can be calculated. This leads to the determination of the mechanical stresses. If the distribution of the field is known, then also the magnetic energy and the self-inductance of the coil can be calculated. With the knowledge of the inductance, the resistance (temperature dependent) and the field factor, i.e. the relation of the generated field in the center versus the driving current, the behavior of the coil attached to an energy source like a capacitor bank can be simulated.
