Abstract
One of the principal tasks of Russian Academy of Sciences (Ras) Center of Geophysical Data Studies and Telematics Applications (Cgds) of the Institute of Physics of the Earth is the development of a world-wide Strong Ground Motion Database (Smdb 1). As is usual in seismology, by strong ground motions we mean accelerations in the near field of strong earthquakes.

This database has been launched in 1991 in the framework of Cea-Emsc-Cgds project devoted to artificial intelligence applications to strong motion data analysis. J. Bonnin (Cipgs, France), B. Mohammadioun (Cea, France), A. Gvishiani and M. Zhizhin (Cgds, Russia) started the project together working in Strasbourg. Since 1995, an important contribution to the project has been provided by A. Mikoyan and A. Burtsev (Cgds).
This study has been implemented in the framework of the collaboration program between Institute of Physics of the Earth in Paris (Ipgp) and Schmidt united Institute of Physics of the Earth in Moscow by A. Beriozko, A. Gvishiani (Uspe), M. Diament, C. Deplus and H. Hébert
