Abstract
The cell wall has to fulfil numerous functions, some of which are apparently contradictory, like e.g. the demarcation of the cell interior on the one hand and the mediation of interactions with the environment on the other hand. These functions can be executed neither with only one cell wall layer, especially in a more complex environment, nor with a cell wall architecture which is constant in all growth phases.
