Abstract
The countries of Central and Eastern Europe have gone through a process of fundamental change since 1989. This transformation from central planning to a market economy, which spread through the former Soviet Union and its successor states in the early 1990s, has reached an advanced state in a number of transition countries. The question now is what still has to be done to bring the transition process to a successful conclusion and how best to do this.
