Prioritizing and Rationing

  • Chapter
Rationing in Medicine

Part of the book series: Wissenschaftsethik und Technikfolgenbeurteilung ((ETHICSSCI,volume 13))

Abstract

To begin with, I have to thank the organizers for inviting me to this promising conference. I am especially grateful to Dr. Kliemt for his initial contact. Second, I would like to introduce myself to clarify the background of my considerations: Precisely speaking, there are two backgrounds: one is clinical, the other is sociology. I am now the head of an Institute for Social Medicine within a medical faculty, trying to combine clinical and sociological reasoning in epidemiology and health services research. Finally, I am co-author of a recently published statement of the Central Ethical Commission at our Federal Board of Physicians. It is on “Priorities in Medical Care” within our system of statuatory health insurance. A part of my presentation will deal with this paper and present some of its basic ideas.
