Abstract
In schemes of optical bistability with increasing absorption, radiation propagates through a sample whose absorption coefficient increases with intensity, for instance, due to the sample heating. With a sufficiently small sample, a point model is justified, describing bistability with an S-like transfer function. For larger samples, the simplest model, which takes into account one-dimensional transverse distributivity, corresponds to thin rod samples, whose characteristics can be averaged in the directions normal to the rod axis.
