The main goal of the book being the demonstration of the particular diversity of optical patterns under conditions of bistability, we start with the definitions and examples of bistable schemes, which will be studied in detail in Chaps. 2 to 6. We will distinguish the cases of “absolute” (in feedback systems) and “convective” (in systems without feedback) bistability. We consider the conditions of bistability and factors which influence the character and the kinetics of hysteresis. We then discuss the reasons for the interest in the effects of spatial distributivity in bistable systems and present a review of the first publications in this field.
