GRIN Media with Loss or Gain

  • Chapter
Gradient-Index Optics

Abstract

In the previous chapters, we discussed light propagation through a passive GRIN medium that exhibited neither loss or gain. This is an idealization, since most dielectric media have losses in the optical domain spectrum. Likewise, the active materials in lasers or waveguides with high amplification can be considered dielectric media exhibiting gain rather than loss [5.1–5.10].
