Vortex Dynamics and the Problem of the Transverse Force in Clean Superconductors and Fermi Superfluids

  • Chapter
Vortices in Unconventional Superconductors and Superfluids

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences ((SSSOL,volume 132))

Summary

We review the basic ideas and results on the vortex dynamics in clean superfluid Fermi systems. The forces acting on moving vortices are discussed including the problem of the transverse force which was a matter of confusion for quite a time. We formulate the equations of the vortex dynamics which include all the forces and the inertial term associated with excitations bound to the moving vortex.

In a system with the Galilean invariance such as 3He, quasiparticle relaxation in the vortex core occurs through their interaction with delocalized excitations which themselves relax at the container walls. This introduces two effective relaxation times in the vortex dynamics. Qualitatively, however, the physics is very similar to the picture described here. For more detail, see N. B. Kopnin and A. V. Lopatin, Phys. Rev. B 56, 766 (1997).
