Abstract

A variety of chronic diseases in infancy and childhood require long-term treatment with glucocorticoids including allergic diseases such as asthma, autoimmune diseases, or chronic inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. While glucocorticoids are effective in controlling inflammatory processes, short- and long-term side effects are still a matter of concern for physicians as well as for the public. Side effects include the suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, skin atrophy, the incidence of cataracts and glaucoma, the reduction of bone mineral density as well as metabolic changes. A major concern in childhood is related to the possibility of reduced growth.
