Selberg’s Upper Bound Method

  • Chapter
Sieves in Number Theory

Abstract

The sieve method developed by Brun around the year 1920 was, with some reason, generally perceived as being rather complicated. We will discuss Brun’s ideas in Chap. 3, in a way which we hope may appear less complicated that some of the earliest accounts. It must be agreed, however, that to follow the details of Brun’s methods through to even the simplest of its applications in number theory is still some way from being a trivial matter.
