Abstract

The last decade of the 20th Century provided the first complete all-sky surveys in γ-ray astronomy in the energy ranges from about 1 MeV to more than 1 GeV. The surveys, which were performed by the telescopes COMP-TEL (Compton Telescope 1–30 MeV) and EGRET (Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope >100 MeV) on board NASA’s Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO), provided a complete overview of the γ-ray sky not only in continuum, but also in line emission (e.g., at 1.809 MeV [radioactive 26A1], 1.157 MeV [radioactive 44Ti], and 2.23 MeV [neutron capture]) at unprecedented sensitivities.
