Control of Insects in Post-Harvest: Radio Frequency and Microwave Heating

  • Chapter

Abstract

The sanitary and health problems caused by the insects that regularly infest raw and processed plant products (e.g. cereals, pulses, dried fruits and vegetables, tobacco, spices, etc.), and that invade the processing plants are difficult to solve. Except for fumigants applied under certain conditions and with strict safety precautions, the use of chemical insecticides on processed products is forbidden. Preventive treatments in empty stores are improperly applied and often inefficient, at least at certain times of year. Only physical control methods can be used without restriction throughout the entire process from storage to marketing.
