Abstract

Thermodynamic properties of strongly nonstoichiometric compounds MX y , vary considerably with the content of nonmetal interstitial atoms, because homogeneity intervals determine the concentration dependence of integral and partial thermodynamic functions. However, at high temperatures (above 1500 K) the composition of nonstoichiometric compounds, especially nitrides MN y , may change as a result of incongruent evaporation. Generally, the nitrogen concentration of nitrides decreases due to evaporation, because the equilibrium partial pressure of nitrogen is much higher than that of a metal at a similar temperature.
