The analysis of spatio-temporal dynamics of landscape structures

  • Chapter
Landscape Balance and Landscape Assessment

Abstract

The development of landscape ecology is directly related to the discussion over the concept of landscape (Finke 1994). This goes back a long way and was chiefly shaped by the works by Bobek & Schmithüsen (1949), Neef (1963, 1964), Leser (1997), and Formen & Godron (1986). Within the sphere of landscape physiology, the concept emerged that the landscape is a synthesis of a large number of individual elements. This concept later became established within the division into units of natural areas and acquired key importance for landscape ecology (Finke 1994). Although attention initially focused on surveying and describing the spatial distribution patterns of ecosystems, the limitations of this highly isolated approach later became apparent, precipitating concentration on questions of how ecosystems mutually influence each other, and how ecological neighbourly relations take place over space and time. Finke (1978) regarded the central task of landscape ecology to be surveying the spatial distribution patterns and the spatio-fnctional combination of ecosvstems.
