Abstract

Quite frequently, medical progress leads to new questions and solutions in the legal field as well. Even when at first glance it is merely a question of applying tried and agreed legal principles to new facts, the principles themselves do not always remain quite untouched. The debate on the regulation of reproductive medicine, for example, had an influence on the definition of a person in law, and also on the constitutional principle of human dignity. The debate on euthanasia has redefined the position of human life in the hierarchy of values. Towards the provisional end of the debate in Germany, questions of legal autonomy and legally protected reverence appear in a new light.
