Surface Space-Charge Region in Non-Equilibrium

Abstract

The injection of charge into a surface space-charge layer modifies its spatial distribution of charge and its potential barrier. Such injection is accomplished by external electric fields and the absorption of light, to name two examples. Depending on the polarity of a bias applied to the semiconductor, positive or negative charge is induced into the semiconductor surface. In such field-effect experiments, variations of band bending can be observed via measurements of surface conductance which probes the surface excess of mobile carriers.
