Oil Refineries in the Netherlands

Abstract

The main aim of this paper is to describe and analyse the position of Dutch oil refineries on the process of industrial restructuring. This restructuring was triggered by changes in supply and demand in the European markets. The fact that oil refineries are seen as substantial polluters has also resulted in action by national and international authorities, aiming to reduce pollution by these industries. In the Netherlands, no special regulations have been implemented on pollution specifically by oil refineries; all measures affecting oil refineries are based on general environmental policy. Of course, these general principles must be “translated” into the specific terms of Dutch oil refineries.
