Electrotransformation of Acidophilic, Heterotrophic, Gram-negative Bacteria

Electrotransformation of Bacteria

Part of the book series: Springer Lab Manuals ((SLM))

Abstract

Members of the genera Acidiphilium and Acidocella are obligately acidophilic, heterotrophic, Gram-negative, aerobic, mesophilic eubacteria (Wichlacz and Unz 1981; Harrison 1984, 1989; Kishimoto et al 1995). They inhabit a variety of low pH environments including acidic sulfide ore leaching and coal mine drainage sites (Harrison 1984), generally created by chemoautotrophic bacteria which oxidize reduced sulfur species to sulfuric acid, e.g. Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans. The exact mechanism(s) by which they are adapted to these highly acidic environments have not been completely elucidated. Such bacteria have potential applications in biomining (recovery of metals from ores using microbiological leaching); in the treatment of acidic hazardous waste; in biological removal of sulfur from coal; and indeed in any bioprocessing applications in which it is necessary or advantageous to operate under acidic conditions.
