Abstract
The W-functions of QED fully determine the theory, as has been explained in Chap. 4. QED is therefore known if its W-functions have been found. This is the problem that we now intend to attack using the Gupta-Bleuler formalism. To this end we need to enumerate the conditions which the W-functions must satisfy. There are three sets of conditions: (a) the equations of motion, i.e. partial differential equations which the W must satisfy, (b) the W-properties explained in Chap. 4, and (c) the renormalization conditions indicated in Chap. 6.
