Information and Communication Technologies to Support Cooperation in the Product Development Process

  • Chapter
New Product Development and Production Networks

Abstract

Cooperation is of vital importance in today’s product development projects. This holds true for the company-internal processes, since only a cross-functional team can develop a complex product competitively today, fulfilling the goals of reduced development time, cost reduction, quality improvement and product as well as process innovation. It holds true also for the relationship with suppliers, especially with the emerging type of system suppliers who coordinate the development and manufacturing of a system that is to be integrated in the final product. Finally, it is essential for the functioning of the global network of transnational companies, where products for the specific markets are increasingly developed in the host countries.
