Abstract

The prospect of inelastic scattering of light from the electronic states of a system was proposed in 1923 by Smekal [1] five years before the discovery of what is now called vibrational Raman scattering by Raman and Krishnan (from liquids) [2] and by Landsberg and Mandelshtam (from crystals) [3].
