Part of the book series: Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences ((SSSOL,volume 128))

Abstract

The capacity of the magneto-optical (MO) disk has grown to 640 Mbyte per 3.5—inch diameter since it was put on the market in 1988. At the beginning of this chapter, the following subjects related to the magneto-optical disk are described: manufacturing the optical disk, the servo system in the optical pickup, the principle of thermo-magnetic recording, and readout by the magneto-optical effect. In the latter part of this chapter, various technologies for high density magneto-optical recording are discussed, including recording using a short-wavelength light source and magnetically induced superresolution.
