Magneto-Optics

Part of the book series: Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences ((SSSOL,volume 128))

Abstract

Nonlinear optical effects with magnetic origin are quite different from those with electric origin. Depending on the crystallographic and the magnetic structure, different nonlinear optical effects due to electric- and magnetic-dipole transitions are expected to appear above and below the magnetic transition temperature. In this chapter, citing experiments on Cr2O3, the observed drastic change of the second harmonic intensity upon crossing the NĂ©el temperature T N is theoretically discussed.
