Abstract
Einstein, in his classical paper on the A and B coefficients for spontaneous and stimulated emission, assumed the existence of quantum jumps, which greatly stimulated quantum mechanics. However, up until very recently, quantum jumps played practically no role in various theories coupling radiation and matter, and these types of interactions are well described by the Schrödinger wavefunction describing the properties of an ensemble, rather than individual systems.
