Abstract

In this chapter we elaborate on Haken’s recent demonstration that the synergetic paradigm of pattern recognition can be used as a conceptual and mathematical framework for the study of decision making in general and in the context of urban and regional planning in particular. The elaboration includes an extension concerning cognitive mapping, a reference to Tversky and co-workers’ studies on the psychology of decision making, and a reformulation in terms of Portugali’s notion of IRN and Haken and Portugali’s model of SIRN. The discussion throughout the chapter follows the above description.
