Abstract
Intensive agriculture in the Netherlands is characterised by the application of massive amounts of nitrogen to the fields. These heavy dressings are applied as liquid manure and nitrogen-fertiliser. The excess nitrogen leaches to the groundwater, and shows up as increasing nitrate concentrations in groundwater and consequently in surface water as well. This phenomenon is especially prominent in sandy regions. In the case of liquid manure application high concentrations of nitrate are accompanied by high concentrations of potassium.
