Abstract

We cannot yet foresee today whether the security problem will in the end cause the failure of the information technology project. But it will be this area that determines whether the foundations of the information technology are firm and secure. Problems of information-technological security tend to be noticed only once damage has already been done. By means of some examples we wish to show the effects and the causes of some such occurrences.

“Today’s systems of information technology offer neither adequate security against computer criminals, nor is the question of the vulnerability of our industrial society towards computer failure or misuse sufficiently clarified”

(Dr. Dirk Henze, the German president of the Federal Office of Security of Information Technology in Bonn)
