Abstract
Philipp Franz von Siebold, born in Würzburg on 17 February 1796, was to become one of the great scientists of the nineteenth century. His medical, scientific and diplomatic skills made him famous both in Europe and Japan. He made Japan accessible for Europeans. While his life and work are still held in high esteem in Japan and even schoolchildren have heard of him, his memory has largely vanished in Europe, even in his hometown of Würzburg.
