Abstract

Brownian motion was first observed by Brown (1828): he recognized that the motion of “molecules” , of size of 10-3 cm, of a pollen in a solution (“colloid”) was not due to internal causes, as it was believed at the time, but it had a mechanical (unknown) origin. It was in fact observable by looking at particles of comparable size and of any material, both organic and inorganic.
