Abstract
Van der Waals theory is one of the earliest and simplest applications of classical statistical mechanics (1873: see [VW88]). Nevertheless it brings up one more of its conceptual problems, although not as deep as the critical problems of Chap. 3. It clearly indicates that one has to give up the naive hope that the theory of phase transitions and phase coexistence could be easily quantitatively accessible.
