Abstract
SEC column packing materials should be rigid and porous and have pore sizes ranging from approximately 30 to 4000 Å. There are three different types of packing materials: semirigid polymer gels, rigid inorganic solids, and soft polymer gels. The required performance of the packing materials involves mechanical, chemical, and thermal stability, high-resolution separation, and low back pressure when packed in columns. Chemical inertness of the packing materials, not only to the mobile phase but also to solutes, is one of the important factors for SEC. In order to maintain high-resolution separation, some of these packing materials are available only in the form of packed columns.
