From Ingenuity to Decadence: Geohistory of an Actual Decline — Grounds for Hope?

  • Monique Mainguet

In the third part we have seen what a wide field the fight against drought has turned I into. However, it appeared that attempts at utilization or development of this environment accelerated its degradation because of a failure to foresee all the factors involved, and that such attempts have unleashed certain mechanisms as precursors to a possible decadence. The first section of the fourth part will cover the definition of this decadence and come to a conclusion which will allow us to explain it, before we analyse the changes in the oasis environment and the degradation of its soils in four case studies involving irrigation and the specific problems of salinization. Desertification will be analysed under this perspective before grounds for hope are given.
